From Asking to Assigning

Using Claude, until now, meant asking. You type a prompt, you get an answer. When the conversation ends, the context disappears. If a task fails halfway through, you start over. That model works for chatbots. It doesn't work for real work.

Managed Agents changes the premise. Now you can assign work to Claude. You hand off a multi-hour task and walk away. If the network drops, if a container restarts, the task doesn't stop — it continues from where it left off.

Anthropic's official blog put it this way: "Shipping a production agent requires sandboxed code execution, checkpointing, credential management, scoped permissions, and end-to-end tracing. That's months of infrastructure work before you ship anything users see. Managed Agents handles the complexity."

Anthropic's official headline is "get to production 10x faster." Not smarter models. Faster deployment. The value proposition has shifted from capability to operability.

What 8 Cents Actually Means

The pricing structure is worth examining closely. Standard Claude API token billing remains in place. On top of that, sessions are billed at $0.08 per active hour. Idle time doesn't count. Web search tool calls add $10 per 1,000 requests.

The number itself matters less than the unit of measurement. In the token-billing era, companies optimized by writing shorter prompts, cutting conversation turns, and minimizing context windows. The incentive was to use fewer words.

Session-hour billing inverts this. What matters now is how much work gets done per hour — not how many tokens were exchanged. Value is measured by tasks completed, not words generated.

A 20-minute customer service session costs roughly $0.027 in runtime (tokens billed separately). An always-on agent running 24/7 adds about $58/month in session fees alone — still a fraction of a human salary.

Anthropic is no longer just billing for "model usage." They're billing for "agent runtime." That's what an AI workforce infrastructure company charges — not an AI model company.

The Brain Doesn't Shut Off

The title of Anthropic's engineering blog post says it plainly: "Decoupling the brain from the hands." This is the architectural heart of Managed Agents.

Three components, physically separated:

  • Session (the brain) — An append-only log of everything that has happened. Stored durably, outside the execution environment. If the environment dies, this survives.
  • Harness (the nervous system) — A stateless loop that calls Claude and routes tool calls. Because it has no state, it can restart at any time, pick up the session log, and continue.
  • Sandbox (the hands) — Where code actually runs. If this crashes, you attach new hands. The brain stays intact.

Security follows from this architecture. Authentication tokens live in secure vaults and never reach the sandbox. Code generated by Claude runs in an environment that can't touch credentials. Anthropic calls this credential isolation.

With the original API, every call was independent. Disconnection meant losing all context. Managed Agents keeps the brain alive even when the hands change — like an employee who remembers yesterday's work even after rebooting their computer.

Who's Already Using It

Anthropic named Notion, Rakuten, Asana, Sentry, and Vibecode as early adopters. Their use cases show where Managed Agents actually fits.

Rakuten: Specialist Agents in One Week

Rakuten's case is the most concrete. They deployed specialist agents across product, sales, marketing, and finance in one week. The agents connect to Slack and Teams and deliver spreadsheets and slide decks directly to teams. Since launch, their task turnaround time dropped from 24 days to 5 — a 79% reduction.

Yusuke Kaji, Rakuten's General Manager of AI for Business, put it this way: "It's about multiplying what each team can achieve, not just automating existing tasks."

Notion: Teams That Delegate to Agents

Notion's PM Eric Liu described it: "Our users can now delegate open-ended, complex tasks — everything from coding to generating slides and spreadsheets — without ever leaving Notion." The word is delegation, not conversation.

Open Questions

The direction is compelling. But several questions don't have answers yet.

Anthropic-Only Infrastructure

Managed Agents currently runs exclusively on Anthropic's own infrastructure. AWS Bedrock and Google Vertex AI are not supported. The Claude SDK supports both platforms for model calls, but Managed Agents itself is platform-locked. For enterprises with multi-cloud strategies, that's a meaningful vendor lock-in risk.

Multi-Agent Orchestration Is Still Waitlisted

The ability for agents to spawn and direct other agents — the full multi-agent orchestration vision — is in research preview with a waitlist. It's on the roadmap, but there's no public release timeline.

The Subscription Cutoff Wasn't a Coincidence

Around the same time as the Managed Agents launch, Anthropic blocked third-party tools from using Claude subscriptions to power agents. Tools like OpenClaw were affected. Reading both moves together: Anthropic appears to be funneling enterprise agent use toward the paid Managed Agents path.

The day before the launch — April 7 — Anthropic poached Eric Boyd from Microsoft to lead infrastructure. The timing of the hire alongside the product launch signals that this isn't a short-term monetization move. It's a long-term repositioning.

Winning the model race and owning the infrastructure that models run on are two different games. Anthropic has started playing the second one.

Not For Everyone

Managed Agents is a compelling offer. But it carries one structural constraint that doesn't go away with better engineering: all data passes through Anthropic's US-based servers. For some organizations, that's fine. For others, it's a hard stop.

Track A — Commercial: Managed Agents Works

Commercial SaaS and enterprise services without strict data sovereignty requirements. Notion, Rakuten, and Asana are exactly this profile. When data flowing through Anthropic's infrastructure creates no regulatory or contractual issue, Managed Agents compresses months of infrastructure work into days. You skip the plumbing entirely and go straight to domain logic.

Track B — Sovereign AI: Managed Agents Is Off the Table

Government agencies, defense contractors, hospitals, and financial institutions operating under strict data residency rules — GDPR, HIPAA, national security classifications, or Korea's K-ISMS and PIPA — cannot use Managed Agents. The moment data leaves for a US corporate server, the compliance violation occurs. It doesn't matter how secure Anthropic's infrastructure is.

The stack for sovereign AI looks different:

  • Models: Open-weight models like Gemma 4 or Llama 4, deployed on-premises or on domestic cloud (NCP, KT Cloud in Korea)
  • Orchestration: LangGraph — graph-based stateful workflows for processes where low autonomy is acceptable and predictability is essential
  • Infrastructure: All processing stays within the customer's VPC. External API calls minimized or eliminated

No matter how good Anthropic makes Managed Agents, sovereign AI is structurally out of reach for them. This is not a technology problem — it's a data residency problem. National-scale and public-sector AI infrastructure requires a separate track by design.

Organizations that don't clarify which track they're on at the start will find themselves rebuilding their architecture later. Before adopting Managed Agents, the right question to ask is: "What happens to this service if data sovereignty requirements appear?"
